This tiny little thing is still the smallest fully mechanical 35 mm camera.
In 1982 my wife received it as a gift from her parents at her confirmation.
The SE was the last regular model of the Rollei 35 series and
was sold until 1983. My parents in law have probably paid DM 300 for it,
today you have to spend between 100 € and 200 € for a
well-preserved used one. This shows quite impressively how well made this
camera is. It is almost pure photography in the smallest space and
therefore not only many collectors, but even serious photographers still
worth something.
The Model 35 SE has a built-in CdS exposure meter, and accordingly a
battery. The leaf shutter works, however, fully mechanical. Three LEDs
within the viewfinder (two red for over- or under-exposure and one green)
help the photographer to choose the correct combination of shutter speed
(1/2-1/500 s and B) and aperture (2.8-22). Ingeniously simple, simply
brilliant. Only the distance you have to estimate, there is no help for it.
The viewfinder is very bright and has a frame with parallax
display for short range. A manual can be found here.
The battery was originally a PX27 mercury-zinc
batteries providing 5.6 Volts. This battery is no no longer permitted
in Germany , but you can
use two CR1/3N 3V cells instead, and fit them into the holder with some
paper and tape. There's a tutorial for this here . The slightly higher
voltage of 6 Volts instead of 5.6 does not cause problems because of the
bridge circuit in the electronics.
To accommodate all the technical features on this little camera, not only
the front side was used for the two dials for aperture, shutter speed and
film speed, but also the camera bottom is full of them. The frame counter
is arranged in a ring around the tripod socket. Looking at the size of the
accessory (hot) shoe, you can see how small the camera actual is. In the
picture on the left side is the film rewind crank.
The term SE is referring to Sonnar and
Electronic. An equally-equipped camera was offered by
Rollei with the Tessar as 35 TE at somewhat lower price. The Sonnar
actually has excellent optical properties and was designed specifically for
this compact camera by Carl Zeiss. Since some time I own two other Rollei
35 cameras, see here and here.
