Dating your Camera - Altersbestimmung

May I introduce a small online tool for determining the age of cameras and lenses simply based on their serial numbers? It is the extension of what I did for screw mount Leica's in 2016. It already existed in this form at the far right bottom of this page for some time. I have now optimized it a little, fed with more serial number tables, and now placed here on the top right. I think usage is more-or-less self-explanatory.

One of my sources:
a French booklet
from 1994 with information
covering up to ca 1991.
ISBN 2-906840-06-8
However, in order to get confidence in the respective result, here are some background information on methodology and sources:

1) The result is only as accurate as the respective source. It is generally assumed that the camera or lens manufacturer has simply counted up.

2) Often linear interpolation is used. For example, a certain camera was built between 1950 and 1954 and had serial numbers from 100,000 to 150,000, then the result for serial #123456 would be 1952. However, it could well be that production was not distributed linearly over the period and this copy was built in 1951 or  even 1953.

3) Basically, only the (interpolated) year of production is given, even if some sources are so accurate that interpolation at month level would also be possible. Here you should again consult the respective source more closely.

4) Currently the tool includes the following cameras, lenses and shutters. In addition to the respective source, I also give my assessment of accuracy (definition below).

*) Accuracy definitions:
* very low accuracy, only linear interpolation, probably +/- 2 years

** low accuracy, at least a few firm serial/year assignments, rest is linear interpolation, +/- 1 years
*** high accuracy, for most years the serial number range is known. Only little interpolation. +/- 0.5 years or better.
**** very high accuracy. Serial number blocks are documented by the manufacturer. Even assignments to specific cameras are possible (e.g. Leica Screwmount).

Update 2020-01-04: Added Leica M rangefinder and Leicaflex/Leica SLR. Eliminated a few bugs, extended the range and accuracy of Meyer-Görlitz lenses (according to Thiele).
Update 2020-04-13: Added NIKKOR manual focus lenses. AF-lenses and early rangefinder lenses can be found in the given source above. Might come another time.
Update 2022-07-17 Added Nagel cameras from 1928 to 1932.
Update 2023-03-11 Updated Compur assignemnet to the new research
Update 2023-06-08 Added Carl Zeiss Werra Cameras

  1. Do you happen to have a resource for dating Kodak Vest Pocket Autographic cameras? The serial number chart on camera wiki seems to be wrong.
