Halbformat - Half-Frame Format

Mein erster 35 mm Film im Halbformat ist fertig und von Entwicklung und Digitalisieren bei photoplaceonline.com zurück. Fotografiert habe ich natürlich mit meiner Olympus PEN F und dem exzellenten Standard-Objektiv 40 mm f/1.4 (dazu später mal mehr). Ausgewählte Bilder sind hier zu begutachten, einfach auf die Bilder klicken um eine größere Abbildung zu sehen. Das Korn des 400 ASA Kodak Ultramax ist doch schon recht deutlich zu sehen. Das halbe Bildformat bedeutet halt nicht nur doppelt soviele Aufnahmen pro Film, sondern auch doppeltes Korn oder halbe theoretische Auflösung bei gleicher Größe der Abzüge. Unabhängig von der unbestreitbaren hohen Qualität des Olympus PEN F Systems ist dies ein nicht wegzudiskutierender Nachteil, der sicher auch entscheidend dazu beigetragen hat, dass das Halbformat nur eine kurze Blüte erlebte. Die Diskussion um Vor- und Nachteile verschiedener Bildformate ist im Moment aktueller denn je und irgendwie scheint sich Geschichte zu wiederholen. Olympus setzte mit ihrer digitalen PEN Serie und dem 4/3-Sensor (quasi ein Viertelformat) wiedermal einen Trend zu wirklich kompakten Systemkameras. Andere ziehen mit APS Sensoren (so gut wie Halbformat, z.B. Sony NEX, Fujifilm X) nach und schließlich stehen diese Tage sogar recht kompakte Vollformat-Kameras (Sony A7) in den Startlöchern. Wenn deren Preise deutlich nachgeben, werde vielleicht sogar ich schwach. Es gilt eben: Was der Hubraum für die automobile Motorisierung, ist das Bildformat für die Fotografie.

Half the image area does not only mean twice as many frames per film, but also double the grain or half the theoretical resolution (at same sized prints). Regardless of the undeniable high quality of the Olympus PEN F system this is a indisputable disadvantage which certainly contributed decisively to the relatively brief flowering of the half-frame format. The discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of different formats is actually more relevant than ever, and somehow history seems to repeat itself. Olympus continued with its digital PEN series and the 4/3-sensor (more or less a quarter-frame format) and again set a trend towards truly compact system cameras. Others prefer APS sensors these days (more or less half-frame format, eg Sony NEX, Fujifilm X). And finally, there might even come quite compact full-frame cameras (Sony A7). If the prices continue to decrease, maybe even I'll faint. It is just: What the engine displacement for the automobile is the film area for the photograph.
